7 SMALL BUSINESS LESSONS FROM "THE GODFATHER"

Dear students,

According to Anthoy Sills, the following are seven important business lessons from "The Godfather".  Rank them and explain in 100 words why did you choose this business lesson as the number one in your list?

Lesson 1: Cultivate and maintain relationships to develop a powerful network.

Vito Corleone’s rise to power is rooted in doing favors for others and building goodwill among his business partners. He develops a reputation as someone who knows how to repay a favor. But just knowing the “right people” is not enough. When undertaker Amerigo Bonasera asks a favor of Vito on Connie’s wedding day, Vito is offended, replying, “We have known each other many years, but this is the first time you’ve come to me for counsel or for help. I can’t remember the last time you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child.” Don’t show up only when you need something.

Lesson 2: Helping people is good for business.

Tech entrepreneur Daniel Gulati observes in the Harvard Business Review that “the professional world is powered by favors.” Helping others achieve their goals can build goodwill and establish your reputation as someone who gets things done. As Johnny Ola tells Michael Corleone, “Hyman Roth always makes money for his partners. One by one, our old friends are gone … Hyman Roth is the only one left, because he always made money for his partners.” People remember people who help them out, and as Don Altobello says in Coppola’s film ”The Godfather Part III,” “The richest man is the one with the most powerful friends.”

Lesson 3: Have a clear vision and be patient.

Michael has a plan to transition his “family” away from illicit activities to become legitimate. At one point his wife chastises him, claiming he promised her the family would be legitimate in five years, yet seven have passed. Although he never achieves his goal, Michael works diligently toward it throughout the three films. He keeps his plans close to the vest and takes action to make them happen, even when his associates are in the dark and think he’s losing his touch.

Lesson 4: Know your objective … and your competition.

In business it’s critical to know exactly what you want and where you’re going. It’s just as important to keep that information to yourself most of the time. There are countless scenes in the trilogy where the only reason certain parties are successful in their endeavors is that they had specific goals and up-to-date (sometimes insider) information on the activities of their competitors. As Michael Corleone says, “Never let anyone know what you are thinking.”

Lesson 5: Have a trusted source of advice and unbiased feedback.

In the Mafia, the godfather typically has a “consigliere” — an adviser or counselor — who gives impartial advice and helps the boss make important decisions. In the business world it is just as important to have someone to turn to that will tell you the truth. This could be a mentor, a business coach or trusted family member.

Lesson 6: Make your message clear.

When Bruno Tattaglia and Virgil Sollozzo see through Vito’s plans to infiltrate their organizations using his enforcer Luca Brasi, they make sure the Corleones know what happened and who was responsible. A fish wrapped in Brasi’s bulletproof vest informs the Corleones that “Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.” When Jack Woltz refuses to cast Johnny Fontane in a movie that would resuscitate Fontane’s career, he receives a message that is just as impossible to misunderstand — a horse head in his bed. Whether you’re sending an email message, mailing a direct mail package, giving a speech or planning a marketing campaign, make certain your message is crystal clear.

Lesson 7: It’s all about the offer.

If you craft a strong, compelling offer, it will motivate your prospect to take action. A great offer can cut through the avalanche of marketing the average consumer is bombarded with daily, overcome resistance and break down barriers to buying, and separate you from the competition. (Think of Domino’s ”30 minutes or less” guarantee.) How will you know when you have a compelling offer? Easy. It will be “an offer you can’t refuse.” And as you make your way to the top of the business world, always remember, in the words of Hyman Roth, “Good health is the most important thing. More than success, more than money, more than power.”

Lesson 5: Make your message clear
Lesson 6: It’s all about the offer.

The lesson one to have a clear vision and patience is the most important to me as an organization can not function without a vision of where we want to go. A company can not deviate from the path to other objectives that are not relevant, it is important that steps be continuous for having achieved the goal. Another point to consider is that we should not be discouraged if there have stumbles, it is normal and will help us grow, rather we must rise to the stumbles, see where we are failing and start over

I choose the lesson 1 as the top of my list because nowadays we are living in a globalized world, it means that we need to have as many important contacts as we can, but that´s not an easy task, we need to cultivate a relationship with those contacts and take sometimes advantage of their knowledge, experience and power, and through time make a lot of effort to maintain those relationships. In conclusion for me networking it´s an obligatory and really important tool, that we, as future general managers should dominate the topic about creating and maintaining relationships.

Also, it is important to know who can be our competition, is to say to be ready for everything. Knowing the competition to me is an advantage inside the market because of we can be different of it offering better proposal or we can attack the weaknesses of the another industries.

I chose the lesson "Have a clear vision and be patient" as number one on the list, because first of all a company must know with clarity what it seeks to achieve in the short and long term, as only in this way can plan all tasks, activities and projects to be implemented, and focus your staff towards the intended goal. In the same way be patient is essential, because the good things do not come quickly or easily, the organization should work hard, be prepared to face difficulties and not falter in times of crisis.

    1. Have a clear vision and be patient.

In my opinion. Have a clear vision and be patient is the main lesson to be learned from the movie “The Godfather”, The patience helps to be cautious in taking decisions not to rush to the events, the vision is the start of the negotiation because if we have no clear what we want the negotiations will inevitably it fails. It is very important to know that in a negotiation you always run the risk of losing if our vision is inadequate and our patience is very little, which is why we must never forget the wise lesson of being patient and to have clear vision.

Lesson 4: Have a clear vision and be patient

Lesson 7: Make your message clear

I chose “Cultivate and maintain relationships to develop a powerful network” as the number one in my list of important business lessons, because it is important to have good relationships with all the people we can, because they are the persons who are going to help us to develop a business. They can give us some advices to help us to achieve our goals and also, they can help us to do some activities that we can’t do alone. Have good relationships represent a big opportunity to gain customers and have a successful company.

I chose the lesson ‘Have a clear vision and be patient’ as the number one on my list. In business is important to be concentrated on what we are doing. A good way to focus in our goal is imagining what we want to reach as it has already happened. Every day we have to make something, even if it is a small action, in order to be where we want to be. Also, we have to understand that this is a process and it is going to take some time to do it. So, being patient is the key to reach our dreams.

I personally believe that the most important lesson from The Godfather movie is lesson 1: "Know your objective and your competition". Because, You have to know what you want in life, what you want to do, and to know your competition for getting that. This is the beginning for everything, especially for business. Once you have a clear idea about this you can analize your competition and try to find or create neew estrategies for to be different. After this you will have the base for the rest: new ideas and used the other lessons. These will be a good complement for the long process for success.

  12. For me the rank would be:

Lesson 1: Cultivate and maintain relationships to develop a powerful network.
Lesson 3: Have a clear vision and be patient.
Lesson 4: Know your objective … and your competition.
Lesson 5: Have a trusted source of advice and unbiased feedback.
Lesson 6: Make your message clear.
Lesson 2: Helping people is good for business.
Lesson 7: It’s all about the offer.

In my opinion the lesson 1 is the most important of the list, because nowadays we should have excellent contacts ensuring that they are the best in the business scope where we live and work. Then, we have some contacts in our scope and in similar areas such that we can extend and develop a powerful network. So, we learn new things, knowledge and gain experience to make the best decisions. But, it is indispensable maintain these relationships over time and to improve them, reaching up to form alliances looking for a win win relationship.

For me the most important lesson is “Have a clear vision and be patient” because company need have an idea of where we want to go. Everyone in the organization need have objectives to show your way. In the business world is not obtained immediately the profits because the negotiation process is long, so we have to be patient. All companies grow slowly, it is necessary that they know our way and they have a clear vision. If company try to do things fast are not well always, but if the company walks step by step soon get yours objectives

I think the most important lesson from “The Godfather” movie is “Have a clear vision and be patient” because before to make anything, you need to know where you want to go. If you know what is your vision you can focus your energies in this main goal. You don´t get the result immediately you need time, resources and work hard in order to achieve your vision, for this reason you have to be patient. Remember to achieve your vision gradually need to work on your objectives and focus in the main things.

In business it is very important to have clear and meaningful purpose and know where we want to go, so it is essential that the person begins to develop activities to fulfill its purpose. I think when we know where we want to go and have a clear view, this gives us enough motivation and energy to continue the purpose.
I also think it's important to know that everything has its time, and that the great objects are not met in the overnight, so the person must be very patient. Finally who has a clear vision and is patient can achieve success.

The best lesson of the movie “The Grandfather” is to have a clear vision and be patient because people need to know that is what they want to do and when you want to reach it. Organizations that want to develop properly should understand the purpose or vision they want to achieve and how to get to meet it. You have to be patient to accept the various points of view that members of organizations because not everyone thinks the same way. In conclusion patience helps to understand other people and lead them to compliance with a common goal.

In my opinion the most important business lesson is to have a clear vision and be patient, because for any activity must be known the objective, so focus efforts to achieve something. also be used human resources, materials, economic in the best way. We must also be patient because a goal is achieved gradually, it takes time to plan, to implement the planned activities. This is important to remember to work together, because when working in teams all people should know the activity in which you are working and if not achieved as planned in the first attempt should keep working until you get what you want.

I think this would be the best option. Having a clear vision and be patient, because we will always have the determination and security to get what they want, from here you can structure a good business plan, also know which is the objective, as competition moves and how we should act in the market. We must also help people to cultivate and maintain relationships to develop a powerful network. I think the results are always based on the actions we take as we raised the structure of our business; In conclusion, the success of a business depends on its bases and decisions.

I think that the activities, all processes are productive group and organization has to have a clear objective and have set goals to guide us in this way and we continue to look at a specific path to achieve planned goals and power establish a track where we can evaluate the results go through the whole process. Thus if a person has established clear objectives and be able to meet the goals it has set within the time set and reach desired succeed in the organization.

  20. I think the 7 lessons are important and the order is:
Lesson 1: Have a clear vision and be patient.
Lesson 2: Know your objective … and your competition
Lesson 3: Make your message clear.
Lesson 4: Have a trusted source of advice and unbiased feedback.
Lesson 5: Cultivate and maintain relationships to develop a powerful network.
Lesson 6: Helping people is good for business.
Lesson 7: It’s all about the offer.

Have a clear vision and be patient is the first business lesson for me because if we have not a clear goal then we do not know as starting in the business. The vision is the guide for the business. Vision indicates the way and the activities necessary to achieve the objective. If it appears that the business idea is clear then investors decide to invest in our business. The relationships that we maintain will be useful if they benefit the fulfillment of the vision of the business. Then the vision is the starting point of a successful business.
